Santa Cruz Flights Cancelled due to Volcano
Posted on October 21, 2017 at 06:55 PM in Schedule Updates
At approximately 0615 this morning (Saturday 21st October), Tinakula Volcano near Lata / Santa Cruz erupted. As a result of the eruption and subsequent Ash Cloud, we had no choice but to cancel today’s Santa Cruz flight. Due to the unpredictable nature of this situation, we can not advise when the flights will be re-instated. As always, the safety of our staff and passengers will be our first priority when considering options. Please refer to our website or Facebook page for flight status update.
UPDATE AS OF TUESDAY, 24 OCTOBER, 2017 - 1:15 PM (SBT)
Tinakula is still emitting volcanic ash, although at a much lower level than it has been up until now.
There is a very small ash cloud from the surface to 600 feet (it was previously up to 35,000 feet), but the ash cloud is currently right over the airport, so we cannot fly over or around it.
Given the prevailing winds, and that they are sending the ash cloud straight at Santa Cruz airport, we will not be able to resume flying until something significant changes – either a change of wind direction, or the volcano stops emitting ash.
